Prefab Cachet is Catching On

Prefabricated housing is becoming more popular, with an expanding range of builders and product choices. There are economy models -- including Clayton Homes' i-house, which costs under $80,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom version. Even with upgraded floors and appliances, the price tag still is just $85,000 including delivery. There also are higher-end options, such as the contemporary, customized units offered by LivingHomes. "Prefab is definitely moving upscale," according to Geoffrey Warner of St.Paul-based Alchemy Architects. He adds that awareness of the niche, and its appeal, is growing. "It's taught in universities a lot more, and you can hardly find a young architect who doesn't have some prefab" [in his or her portfolio], Warner notes.
